Course Summary

Speed measurement uses scientifically proven calculations to determine the speed that an object is moving. In law enforcement, this is typically done with radio detection and ranging (RADAR) waves and lasers.

This course will cover the different RADAR bands, X, K, and Ka and teaches the history and scientific principles behind RADAR waves, the factors that determine the accuracy of RADAR speed detections, and the use, calibration, and tracking history of the RADAR unit.

Light detection and ranging (LIDAR), unlike RADAR, also measures distance, which is necessary for the device to calculate speed. LIDAR also operates at the speed of light, which is 186,000 miles per second. In this section on LIDAR, you will learn about the history of lasers, their composite design, and the science behind using lasers to detect vehicle speeds.
