Course Summary

This course covers basic emergency lifesaving care and includes administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), stopping bleeding, using an AED, and addressing choking. This course will show officers the proper way to apply CPR on infants, children, and adults.

CPR

Over the years, there have been improvements to the CPR process. Once taught as the A-B-Cs of resuscitation (Airway, Breathing, Compression), CPR now focuses on compressions, with checking and clearing the airway a secondary concern. In the past, checking for a pulse was also part of the sequence. This has been de-emphasized since a pulse can be difficult to detect even for a trained health care provider.

The course covers the following topics in detail:

  • Making the scene safe
  • Adult CPR (Persons older than 8 years)
  • Child CPR (Persons under 8 years)
  • Infant CPR (Younger than 1 year)
  • Two-rescuer CPR
  • Rescue breaths
  • Automated external defibrillator(AED)
  • AED special situations and safety
  • Assisting a choking victim
  • Assisting a choking child
  • Bleeding control
