Suicide is the leading cause of death in most confinement settings, and suicide prevention is a form of emergency lifesaving. It is the legal obligation of police officers to make reasonable efforts to ensure the safety of those in custody.

This course outlines those individuals who may be at higher risk of suicide, as well as signs or symptoms that may indicate suicidal tendencies. Police officers must be able to handle and de-escalate suicidal situations to prevent unnecessary deaths.
