Course Summary

When an officer is killed in the line of duty, that tragedy not only affects the officer and his immediate family, but it can also have a severe and long-lasting impact upon his fellow officers, surrounding departments, and even the community.

We certainly all hope that we will never be touched by such a tragedy. But the reality is - it could very well happen to you, or someone in your department, at any time.

Therefore, we strongly suggest that YOU become thoroughly familiar with the following information - and discuss it with your family.

Yes, this is a difficult subject for any officer when speaking with his or her family members, however, it is a central goal of every officer to be prepared, so please extend the same focus onto this uncomfortable subject.

Required Training for All Officers

The Code of Virginia, Line of Duty Act, Title 9.1-400 requires that all law enforcement officers receive training regarding the benefits available to them and their beneficiary.

Specifically, the law states that any law enforcement or public-safety officer entitled to benefits shall receive training within 30- days of his employment, and again every two years thereafter, concerning the benefits available to either them, or their beneficiary, in case of disability or death in the line-of-duty.

This course is based upon the lesson plan that was developed by the Department of Criminal Justice Services.

With this in mind, let's look at some of the benefits that are available to the survivors of a law enforcement officer that is killed in the line of duty.
